  • How much is stamp duty on a £500,000 house?

For a home mover it is £15,000. A first-time buyer pays £10,000, and a second home costs £40,000.

  • Do first-time buyers pay stamp duty?

First-time buyers pay nothing on the first £300,000 and 5% on the portion from £300,001 to £500,000. If the price is above £500,000 the relief is lost and standard rates apply to the whole price.

  • How much extra stamp duty do non-UK residents pay?

Buyers who are not UK resident pay a 2% surcharge on top of the normal rates, on the whole purchase price. It stacks with the 5% higher rates if the buyer already owns a home anywhere in the world.

  • Does this apply in Scotland and Wales?

No. These are the rates for England and Northern Ireland. Scotland charges Land and Buildings Transaction Tax and Wales charges Land Transaction Tax, at different rates.
